The M5 Mac Studio: What Changed, and Who Actually Needs It

Apple finally put the M5 series of chips into the Mac Studio. So let’s go through everything that is actually new here: the parts I am excited about, the parts I am disappointed in, whether you should upgrade, and whether you should save some money and get a Mac mini instead.

I do not have any of these machines on hand yet. The base models are on the way and I will be putting them through real benchmarks and software tests. For now this is the honest breakdown of the specs Apple announced and who each configuration is really for.

M5 Mac Studio (M5 Max and M5 Ultra)

Faster storage, Wi-Fi 7, and a clever four-chip Ultra, but Apple did not fix the stingy starting storage and RAM. A great buy coming off an M1 or M2, and easy to skip if you already own an M4 Max.

Same enclosure, much faster insides

At first glance these look exactly like the M4 Max and M3 Ultra Mac Studios. It is the same exact enclosure. The changes are all under the hood, and some of them are really nice.

The storage is the headline. It is about double the speed of the last generation, close to 12,000 MB/s on the read and the write, compared to around 6,000 MB/s on the previous chips. You still get Thunderbolt 5, and the machines are now upgraded with Wi-Fi 7 chips. There is also Genlock over USB-C, and with the Ultra chip you can run up to 8 external displays off a single computer. The M5 Max can still drive 5 external displays, which is plenty for most desks.

You can now configure these all the way up to 512GB of memory if you have that kind of money, but that configuration does not ship until late October.

What Apple did not fix

There is a lot that is still the same, and this is the part that frustrates me. Even though Apple raised the prices, the Max chip still starts with 512GB of storage. The laptops all moved up to at least a terabyte, and the M5 Max MacBook Pro now starts with 2TB, so it is hard to understand why the desktop is still starting at 512GB. The M5 Ultra starts with 1TB.

RAM did not move the way I was hoping either. You get 36GB with the M5 Max and 96GB right out of the box with the M5 Ultra. They did not raise the starting RAM or the starting SSD to the level I wanted.

If you do plan to buy one, my advice is to skip Apple’s expensive internal storage upgrades where you can and add fast external storage instead. A good Thunderbolt SSD gets you there for a fraction of what Apple charges per terabyte.

Should you upgrade from an M4 Max?

I went back and forth on which upgrades I would pick on the M5 Max, because I already run a heavily upgraded M4 Max: the 2TB, 64GB of RAM, and I upgraded the GPU right when it launched. It felt expensive at the time, and honestly that M4 Max still runs everything totally fine for me.

One of the biggest improvements in the M5 series over the M4 is the neural accelerators on every core, which leads to better local AI performance. I do not do a ton of local AI. I mostly use my computer for video editing. So if you already have an M4 Max and you are happy with the specs you picked, there is really no reason to upgrade.

On an M1 or M2? Now is a good time

If you are running an M1 or M2 era machine, this is a good time to buy, because Apple has made significant improvements over the last few generations of chips.

If you are running local AI models or grading 8K footage, the Ultra chip with the 512GB ceiling is a real reason to consider the jump, but it is going to cost a lot. The thing to look at is not just the price. It is how much productivity you actually get back for springing for all those upgrades. For my own math, my M4 Max still handles my 6K multi-cam just fine, and Apple’s own number puts the Ultra at 1.3 times the CPU performance of the M3 Ultra that launched in March of 2025. That is not $3,000 of reason to upgrade on its own.

The Ultra is four chips fused into one

There are really two things that have changed with the Ultra. The first is how it is built. The M5 Ultra is four chips in one. Apple fused two M5 Max chips together, and each of those is already two pieces of silicon. The connection between them is fast enough that macOS never sees four of anything. As far as your software knows, it is one chip. This is the first time Apple has done this.

Same 80 GPU cores, rebuilt not enlarged

The second thing is what Apple did not change. It did not raise the graphics core count. The M3 Ultra that Apple compared this to already had 80 GPU cores, and the M5 Ultra also goes up to 80 GPU cores. So every graphics and AI gain came from redesigning the cores, not adding more of them.

Most coverage is going to miss that. Apple did not build a bigger GPU. It rebuilt the one that was already there.

Memory bandwidth is the real story

Here is where these machines separate themselves. The M5 Ultra has 1.2TB per second of memory bandwidth. The M6 Mac mini goes up to 170GB/s, and the M5 Pro does 307GB/s. The M5 Max is a big jump over both of those: it runs 460GB/s, and if you go up to the 40-core GPU it hits 614GB/s.

So against the M5 Pro Mac mini’s 307GB/s, you are looking at somewhere between 1.5 and 2 times the memory bandwidth depending on the configuration. That is the real reason to step up from a mini to a Studio. It is not about the core count. The Studio moves memory roughly twice as fast, and that shows up in exports, in big timelines, and in anything AI.

What local AI actually needs

Great local AI performance needs two things. It needs enough RAM capacity to hold the model you are loading, and it needs the memory bandwidth to read and write across it quickly and pull the whole model out of memory. The memory speed sets the pace of the chip.

If you get the 512GB M5 Ultra, you can hold models on this desktop that will not fit on anything else you can buy. For AI work especially, the price is really about what fits into memory more than how fast the processor is.

Clustering over Thunderbolt 5

Apple has also said you can cluster these machines over Thunderbolt 5. Link them together and Apple claims you get about three times the performance of a single machine. No one outside Apple has been able to test this yet, but it is another genuinely exciting feature for anyone pushing heavy AI or rendering workloads.

ProRes engines and export speed

If you are a video editor, this matters. The M5 Ultra has four ProRes encode and decode engines, and the M5 Max has two. That means video exports should be about double the speed on the Ultra over the Max. If you are doing a lot of exports, or long exports of big projects, the Ultra saves you a lot of time. And time, at the end of the day, is still money.

Pricing and the M5 Max sweet spot

The Ultra starts at $5,500, and a maxed-out version runs past $18,000 today. It would be over $20,000 once the 512GB model is available. On the Ultra there is nothing between getting 96GB of RAM and a $4,000 jump up to 256GB, which is a rough gap.

The M5 Max starts with 36GB of RAM and you can still get it with a 512GB SSD out of the box. Upgrading to 1TB or 2TB gets expensive fast, and going up to 64GB of RAM costs an extra $1,000.

So here is my rule if you are debating the M5 Max against the M5 Ultra: keep the M5 Max build in the $3,000 to $4,000 range. If your Max configuration climbs past $4,000, you should seriously consider just buying the Ultra instead, because of the extra memory bandwidth, the extra video encoders and decoders, and the 96GB of RAM it includes out of the box. One more detail: the M5 Ultra has Thunderbolt 5 ports on the front and the back, while the M5 Max only has USB speeds on the front ports. Get a cheaper M5 Max, or step up and get the Ultra. Try not to land in the expensive middle.

Mac Studio versus Mac mini

If you are thinking about a Mac Studio, you need to at least look at the Mac mini, because Apple just launched the M5 Pro and M6 Mac minis too. The same logic applies: look at the upgrades you are thinking about before you decide whether to stay on the cheaper model or step up the whole chip.

The M6 Mac mini is the best pick if you just need the cheapest capable computer. I would only upgrade one thing on it. Either go to 24GB of RAM and keep the 256GB of storage, or bump to the 512GB storage option, which lands around $1,200. Push it past that, closer to $1,400, and you should get the M5 Pro instead, because it has double the memory bandwidth.

The M5 Pro Mac mini starts at $1,700, which is $800 cheaper than the Mac Studio, but it has about half the memory bandwidth while still starting with 24GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD. You can add more RAM or storage, but once you push the mini up around $2,200 in upgrades, just get the Mac Studio. It is going to be way faster than the M5 Pro mini, partly because of the double video encoders and decoders. At the end of the day, all of these computers are going to be great. The question is only which one fits your work and your budget.

The verdict

The M5 Mac Studio is a real step forward where it counts: storage speed roughly doubles, you get Wi-Fi 7 and Genlock, and the Ultra is a genuinely clever piece of engineering as the first Apple chip fused from four pieces of silicon. The memory bandwidth gap over the Mac mini is the honest reason to spend up, not the core count.

But Apple did not fix the things that annoy me. The Max still starts at 512GB of storage, the starting RAM did not move, and the GPU core count is flat. If you already own an M4 Max, stay put. If you are on an M1 or M2, this is a good time to buy. If you run local AI or grade 8K, the Ultra with 512GB is the machine no one else can match, as long as you can stomach the price.
