Apple just updated the Mac mini with two new chips, the M6 and the M5 Pro. The problem is that the configuration page has a lot of choices, and the upgrades stack up fast. Click a few of them and you have quietly doubled the price.
So I went through every option on Apple’s site: chip, RAM, storage, and ethernet. Below is what I think is worth the money, what you can skip, and the exact configs I would buy for general use, a media server, audio production, and video editing. For 99% of people the M6 is the right chip. Spend your upgrade money on storage first, get to 512GB and 24GB of RAM, and run everything else off an external Thunderbolt SSD.
- Buy the M6 if you want a desktop for general use, photo and video editing, productivity, or a media server. It handles almost anything.
- Get the M5 Pro if you do audio production, heavy local AI, or a lot of video exporting and 3D rendering.
- Storage is the upgrade that matters most. 256GB is not enough in 2026.

M6 or M5 Pro: pick the chip first
The first choice on the page is the chip: the M6 or the M5 Pro. For 99% of people, the M6 is the right call. It handles video editing, photo editing, and basic productivity, and it will take almost any task you throw at it.
The M5 Pro buys you extra speed and power for more demanding workloads. It also changes a few things by default. The M5 Pro ships with a 512GB SSD and 24GB of RAM stock, and it has Thunderbolt 5 instead of the M6’s Thunderbolt 4. On the M6 you have to pay to get that same RAM and storage. Going from the base M6 all the way up to the M5 Pro costs quite a bit more, and Thunderbolt 5 is not something most people will notice. Unless you know you need the Pro, start with the M6.
The M5 Pro CPU and GPU upgrades
If you do go with the M5 Pro, it gives you the option to upgrade the CPU and the GPU. That is a good choice if you are doing a lot of local AI work and need the extra GPU cores for processing, or if you are doing a lot of video editing and exporting or 3D rendering. Those tasks lean on the GPU, so the extra cores pay off.
If that is not you, the base M5 Pro is still a great machine. It is a solid pick for audio production, or if you just want to nudge the setup up a level over the M6 without chasing the top config.
RAM: how much to actually buy
Once you pick the chip, you choose the RAM. The M6 starts at 16GB, which is plenty for most people buying this computer. The only RAM upgrade I would buy on the M6 is the 24GB tier. That brings the machine to about $1,100, and it is the single biggest upgrade you can make to it.
I would not go to 32GB on the M6. It pushes the price higher than you should be spending on an M6 and puts you close to M5 Pro territory. If you get 32GB you will also want the 512GB SSD with it, and now the upgrades are piling up. The 48GB and 64GB options require the M5 Pro chip. Those matter if you do a ton of multitasking or want to run larger local AI models. If you do all your work in the cloud, neither one matters.
Storage: why 256GB falls short
Honestly, storage should sit above RAM in Apple’s configuration order. The Mac mini starts at 256GB, and that is not enough in 2026. By the time you run Mail, run iMessage with big attachments coming in, and install your applications, 256GB fills up fast. The longer you use a Mac, the more system storage it eats too. A 256GB machine is only going to last a couple of years. A 512GB one will last much longer.
So here is the tricky call if you can only make one upgrade: 512GB of storage, or 24GB of RAM? I went with the 512GB SSD. You have to have room for your files. You can always add external storage or lean on it later, and if that is how you think, get the 24GB instead. But for most people, spend the money on 512GB. Running out of space for your files is a worse spot to be in than being a little short on RAM. I think 512GB is an absolute necessity.
Once you add the 24GB of RAM and the 512GB SSD, you are at about $1,300. That is as far as I would go with upgrades on this computer.

Skip Apple's big storage tiers, add an external SSD
You can keep going past 512GB to 1TB or 2TB of built-in storage. The 1TB is nice for video editing because you do not have to reach for an external drive as often. But here is the thing: most people doing video work or juggling lots of files are going to buy an external SSD at some point anyway. So why pay Apple to go beyond 512GB?
This is a desktop, which makes external storage easy. Keep your system files, your iMessage, and anything you touch every day on the built-in 512GB SSD, and run everything else off an external Thunderbolt SSD. Stop at the 512GB tier unless you absolutely refuse to use an external drive. A Thunderbolt dock makes it even cleaner if you want the drives hidden and your ports free.
2.5 gigabit vs 10 gigabit ethernet
Next is ethernet. 2.5 gigabit is standard on the Mac mini now, which is a genuinely nice move from Apple and is fine for 99% of users. You can pay $100 more for 10 gigabit, but that is a tough sell for most people. To actually use 10 gigabit you need the more expensive networking gear behind it, and it all has to be in place.
If you know you will be doing remote media access or working off a NAS a lot, 10 gigabit is worth buying from the factory. You can add ethernet later with a Thunderbolt dongle, but that will probably cost you more than the $100 upgrade. For everyone else, stick with 2.5 gigabit.
The Apple trade-in
Apple lets you trade in an old Mac during checkout, which makes getting rid of your current computer simple. You will not get as much as you would selling it yourself on a third party site, but it is handy if you would rather not deal with a sale. Just know you are trading some money for convenience.
The configs I recommend
Here is how I would actually buy this, based on how you plan to use it.
- General desktop: the $900 256GB base is okay if you run external storage, but I would spend the extra to get 512GB so all your files live locally without tying up a Thunderbolt port.
- The one most people will be happy with: the 256GB version with 24GB of RAM at $1,100, especially if you plan to add internal or external storage later.
- Media storage or a home server: that same $1,100 base works. Keep it at 16GB of RAM, run external storage, and pay for the 10 gigabit ethernet upgrade so it moves files fast.
My own pick for a do-everything machine is the M6 with 24GB of RAM and the 512GB SSD.
Best setup for audio production
If you are buying this for audio production, upgrade to the M5 Pro chip. We have seen the Pro chip give about double the tracks in software like Logic Pro, and it typically cuts bounce time on a project roughly in half. That is real, daily time savings.
For audio I would also go up to 1TB of internal storage, because that gives you more fast built-in space for your samples and audio libraries. The same 1TB logic applies to video editing: it lets you edit directly on the machine and archive your clips later.
When to buy a Mac Studio instead
Be careful with the RAM upgrades. Once you start climbing, say going up to 48GB, you push the Mac mini toward a $2,500 price tag. That is Mac Studio territory. My rule: if you are spending over $2,000 on a Mac mini, just buy the Mac Studio instead. You get more machine for the money at that point.
The bottom line
For almost everyone, the answer is the M6, with 24GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, which lands around $1,300. Storage is the upgrade that matters most, so fix that first, add the 24GB of RAM, and then stop. Run everything else off an external Thunderbolt SSD instead of paying Apple for bigger internal drives.
