It folds open into a stand that holds the iPad, and it runs every one of its ports over the single USB-C cable you plug into the tablet. This review is for anyone who wants to turn an iPad into a real desktop setup, and it is also worth a look if you carry a laptop and want a fold-flat hub you can leave at your desk. Design, Build, and Size
The first thing I noticed unboxing it is that it is sized for the iPad. Satechi picked the exact thickness to hold the tablet in snug, and it does that job well. The space black color looks sleek, and the whole thing feels like a premium piece of kit rather than a cheap dongle. My one design wish is the front lip. It is cut for an iPad, so if you try to set a laptop on it, a MacBook kind of fits but not much else does. A slightly wider lip would let it double as a laptop stand, and right now it does not quite get there.
Power Pass-Through and Data Speeds
Here is a detail I like: the ports do not need power to work. Plug the hub into your iPad and everything is live without an external adapter. When you do want power, the back has a 100W USB-C pass-through port. Whatever USB-C charging cable you plug in there feeds power straight to the host device, so your iPad charges while the rest of the ports keep running. On data, the 10Gbps USB-C port had no trouble running external SSDs for me. That is the port I would use for fast storage, and it held up.
Folds Flat and Travels
The stand unfolds to hold the iPad and folds back down when you are done. On the bottom there is a channel where you can tuck the cable in for storage, so nothing dangles when it is packed up. Fold it flat, drop it in the back of a backpack, and it goes with you. Or leave it plugged into your setup at work and treat it as a fixed dock. It handles both roles.
Audio Jack and Fast SD Cards
The side has a headphone jack, so you can run wired headphones straight off the hub. On the other side sit the SD and microSD slots, and both support the fast UHS-II speeds. That matters. A lot of cheaper hubs put in slow card readers, so if you are pulling large photo or video files off a camera card, the UHS-II support here is a real advantage over the budget options.
Stand or Hub: How It Compares to the On-The-Go Hub
You do not have to use it as a stand. Pull the cable out and it still works as a plain docking station, so you can hand it to an iPhone or a laptop and use the ports on their own. It is a little oversized for that job, though. Satechi also sells the On-The-Go Hub, which carries almost all the same ports in a much smaller body. The trade-off is simple: the smaller hub cannot hold your iPad up, and it does not fold into a stand. Here is how the two line up.

Accessories and Cables That Pair With It
Satechi has a stack of other gear that fits this setup well. Their wireless keyboard and their On-The-Go mouse are both good options if you are building out the desk. If you want to feed power into the pass-through port, they sell a power adapter for it. Their braided USB-C cables are some of the best and fastest I have used. They handle 80Gbps data speeds and charging up to 240W, so there is plenty of headroom no matter what you plug them into.
What I Would Change
I have a short list for the next version. First, the captive cable is just about the right length for an iPad, and it worked fine with both my 13-inch and 11-inch iPads, but a smidge more length would give a little wiggle room getting the tablet plugged in. Second, the front lip. Widen it so it accepts larger Apple laptops and this becomes a laptop stand too, not just an iPad one. Third, and this is the big one, I really wish it had an Ethernet port on the back. The smaller On-The-Go Hub has one, and I think wired networking is a slept-on feature for a hub. Wireless is better than ever, but for certain environments a wired jack is genuinely handy, and the people buying this stand are exactly the ones who would use it.
Final Verdict: Is It Worth $80?
The Satechi On-The-Go Stand Hub retails for about $80, which is a premium price. When I add up what you get, I think it earns it. You get a stand and a hub in one, 100W power pass-through, 4K 60 out over HDMI, a USB-C port on the back, and the faster SD card slots that lower-end hubs leave out. It is a really strong offering. The only two things holding it back from perfect are a front lip that is too narrow to work as a laptop stand, and the missing Ethernet port. Fix those and it is hard to beat. As it stands, if your main device is an iPad, this is one of the cleanest ways to give it a desk.
The Bottom Line
The Satechi On-The-Go Stand Hub does the one thing an iPad needs most. It takes a single USB-C port and turns it into a full desktop dock, with a stand built in and the cable tucked out of sight. At $80 it is not cheap, but the 100W pass-through, 4K 60 HDMI, 10Gbps ports, and UHS-II card slots back up the price. A wider laptop lip and an Ethernet port would make the next version close to ideal. For an iPad-first setup, I recommend it.
