The M5 MacBook Pro lineup is finally complete. The M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are here in laptops, and I put both machines through real-world tests to see how much more you actually get from the Max. The short version is that the M5 Pro holds up really well against the M5 Max, which costs $1,400 more. Thanks to B&H for loaning me both computers so I could run them head to head. This post walks through every test, every number, and who each machine is actually for.

The M5 Pro is the sweet spot on price to performance. The M5 Max earns its premium only if you render and export files all day.

Intro: Who This Is For

This comparison is for anyone deciding between the M5 Pro and the M5 Max MacBook Pro and wondering if the extra money is worth it. If you code, produce audio, design interfaces, or edit video part of the time, the M5 Pro is likely all you need. If you are an AI researcher, a 3D animator, or a high-end videographer working with 8K footage, the M5 Max has real advantages I will get into. I ran actual workloads on both, not just synthetic benchmarks, so you can see where the gap is real and where it disappears.

Same Body, One Tiny Difference

At first glance these computers look identical. They have the same ports, the same body design, and there is no way to tell them apart from the outside. The one funny detail is that the M5 Max weighs 0.1 lb more than the M5 Pro. Both have fans, and unlike the base model M5 MacBook Pro, the M5 Pro and the M5 Max each have two fans. You can get either one in a 14 or 16-inch display size. The 16-inch costs $500 more, but with the M5 Pro chip that 16-inch configuration gives you a better CPU and GPU than the base model of the standard M5 Pro.

The Chip Variations and Core Counts

The naming gets confusing because there are a couple of variations of each chip. Each one has a stock chip, which is a binned chip that does not have all the GPU and CPU cores the upgraded version has. The upgraded chip adds more CPU and GPU cores. It costs an extra $200 to get the upgraded M5 Pro chip and an extra $300 for the upgraded M5 Max chip. If you get the top spec version of each, both have the same number of CPU cores. The difference shows up in graphics: at top spec the M5 Max has double the GPU cores, reaching 40 GPU cores on the maxed out configuration.

Memory Bandwidth, RAM, and SSD Scaling

The biggest difference between the two chips is memory bandwidth, which is how fast the RAM talks back to the CPU and GPU. The M5 Pro comes in at 307 GB/s and the M5 Max doubles that to 614 GB/s. If you edit video, the M5 Max also has double the video encoders and decoders, so it can export videos at roughly double the speed of the M5 Pro.

The memory and storage options differ too. The M5 Pro comes with 24, 48, or 64 GB of RAM. The M5 Max starts at 36 GB and scales to 48, 64, or 128 GB. On either machine, upgrading the RAM forces you onto the upgraded chip, so the price climbs. Apple raised the starting SSD sizes as well. The M5 Pro starts at 1 TB and goes up to 4 TB, while the M5 Max ships with 2 TB stock. Both use the same 11,500 MB/s SSDs, faster than any SSD Apple has put in a laptop before.

AI Performance Tests

AI is one of the big advantages of the M5 chips, so I started there. First I ran Diffusion Bee to generate an image of a cat working on a laptop and eating nachos. It took 8.9 seconds on the M5 Pro and 5.75 seconds on the M5 Max.

Next I loaded Gemma 34B into LM Studio and asked both to write 50 paragraphs summarizing the Roman Empire. Time to first token was close: 0.24 seconds on the M5 Pro and 0.18 seconds on the M5 Max. Generation ran at 96 tokens per second on the M5 Pro and 132 on the M5 Max. Then I fed in a long article to summarize. Time to first token was 0.85 seconds on the M5 Pro and 0.52 seconds on the M5 Max, with 97 tokens per second on the Pro and 134 on the Max. Both stayed under a second to first token, which felt very fast.

Code Compiles and 3D Rendering

I ran the Xcode benchmark to time a code compile. It took 104 seconds on the M5 Pro and 96 seconds on the M5 Max. That is close enough that for code I would say the M5 Pro is more than sufficient. I ran it multiple times to be sure, and I was honestly surprised how tight it was.

Then I moved to Blender. The classroom scene rendered in 19.47 seconds on the M5 Pro and 12 seconds on the M5 Max. The barbershop scene, which is larger and more complex, took 3 minutes and 11 seconds on the M5 Pro and 2 minutes and 25 seconds on the M5 Max. Not a bad improvement on the heavier scene.

Audio Production in Logic Pro

I put Logic Pro on both and loaded the Logic benchmark project. The M5 Pro ran 340 MIDI tracks without any audio dropouts, and the M5 Max pushed that to 400 MIDI tracks. On bounce tests, a 64-track project took 13 seconds on the M5 Pro and 9.5 seconds on the M5 Max. A 500-track project took 1 minute 35 seconds on the M5 Pro and 1 minute 20 seconds on the M5 Max. For audio work the gap is small.

Video Editing in Final Cut Pro

Final Cut Pro runs great on both, and for day-to-day editing they feel the same. On more complex projects with a lot of multi-cam clips playing at once, the Max pulls ahead thanks to the extra ProRes encode and decode engines. Running a magnetic mask on an 18-second clip took 23 seconds on both machines.

Exports told the clearer story. A 3-minute 4K project with titles, audio effects, and color grading exported in 1 minute 20 seconds on the M5 Pro and 52 seconds on the M5 Max. A 30-minute 4K project took 12 minutes 40 seconds on the M5 Pro and 8 minutes 16 seconds on the M5 Max. That is not quite the double improvement I expected. When I compared my M4 Max Mac Studio against the M4 Pro Mac mini, export times were about double, so this may be a laptop limitation, possibly thermal throttling.

Lightroom Classic: The Unoptimized Test

I wanted to test software that is not optimized for Apple silicon, so I loaded 500 raw images into Lightroom Classic. Time to initial previews was 18 seconds on the M5 Pro and 15.4 seconds on the M5 Max, very close. Exporting 50 photos to JPEG and then 200 photos to JPEG ran at the same speed on both. On the 500-photo export, the M5 Max was actually 3 seconds slower than the M5 Pro. That may be a testing anomaly on my end, but it was wild to see the M5 Pro keep pace with, and even edge out, the Max on Lightroom exports.

Benchmarks and Everyday Use

I also ran Geekbench 6, Geekbench AI, and Cinebench. The scores landed about where I expected, with the main improvement from the M5 Max showing up in GPU performance. For day-to-day tasks like browsing the web, answering email, or using apps where you are not bouncing or exporting, these two feel identical. The Geekbench CPU single-core and multi-core scores are very close, which lines up with what I felt while using them.

Price to Performance: Which One Wins

After testing both and comparing them to other current Apple machines, the M5 Pro MacBook Pro feels like the sweet spot on price to performance, especially if you need a laptop. It starts at $2,200, comes with the XDR screen, and gives you a big jump over the MacBook Air for heavier work. The M5 Pro also significantly improves over the standard M5 MacBook Pro.

The M5 Max scores close to the M5 Pro on almost everything except some advanced GPU results, and a lot of that shows up in benchmarks rather than real exports. The Max does justify its premium in specific ways: the 614 GB/s memory bandwidth helps with massive data sets and high-resolution textures that could choke the M5 Pro, and with 40 GPU cores on the upgraded chip, AI and LLM work in LM Studio or Diffusion Bee can run about twice as fast. The dual media engines also help high-end colorists working with 8K raw footage.

My honest take is do not buy the M5 Max unless you are rendering and spitting out files all day. It is still limited by the laptop form factor and the heat it generates, and on a 14 or 16-inch screen you will not be as efficient as a fixed workstation with external displays. If you work at one station, save the money, get the M5 Pro, and spend the difference on monitors. An M4 Max Mac Studio is also worth a look, since it scored very close to the M5 Max MacBook Pro.

Final Verdict

Go for the M5 Pro MacBook Pro if you want the fastest single-core performance available and your work is mostly CPU bound. Coding, audio production, interface design, and a good amount of video editing and 3D rendering all run great on it, and it offers the best utility per dollar. Step up to the M5 Max MacBook Pro if you are an AI researcher, a 3D animator, or a high-end videographer, because in those fields time is money and the return comes from much faster render times and the ability to load 100 GB AI models into unified memory.
