The new Mac minis and Mac Studios are up for pre-order, and the question I keep getting is simple: should you get the M5 Pro Mac mini, or spend $800 more on the M5 Max Mac Studio? At first glance the gap looks small. The CPU only gives you a few more cores on the Studio. But the CPU is not really where your money is going.
There are four lines on the spec sheet that actually separate these two machines. If fewer than two of them describe your work, you are about to spend $800 on a computer that is going to feel exactly like the cheaper one. I have not tested either machine yet. Pre-orders are open, they ship September 22nd, and I have all four models on the way for real world testing. This is the buying framework I am using until those tests are done.
The $800 jump to the Max Studio is worth it for video editors and local AI work. For almost everyone else the M5 Pro mini feels identical, and a lot of people should just buy the M6 mini.

The $800 Question: Who This Is For
Here is the honest version before we get into specs. The Mac Studio is not automatically the better buy because it costs more. It is the better buy for a specific kind of work. My whole goal here is to keep you from paying Studio money for mini performance.
The core counts make the gap look smaller than it is, so people assume they are getting a little more of everything. You are not. The real separation lives in four places: GPU cores, memory capacity, memory bandwidth, and the media engines. Match your work against those four lines and the decision makes itself.

The CPU Is Not Where Your Money Goes
Start with the part that fools people. On the CPU side the two machines are close. The M5 Pro mini tops out at 18 CPU cores when you upgrade the chip, and the base M5 Max Studio has 18 CPU cores too. So if you were buying on CPU cores alone, you would be spending $800 for almost nothing.
The graphics are a different story. The M5 Pro mini starts with a 16 core GPU and upgrades to 20. The M5 Max Studio starts at 32 GPU cores and goes up to 40. That is roughly double the GPU at every tier. If your work leans on the GPU, that is the first line that matters to you. If it does not, the extra cores are sitting there doing nothing.
Memory and Bandwidth, the Real Divider
In my opinion the memory is what actually splits these machines. The M5 Pro mini starts at 24GB of unified memory and you can push it to 64GB. The M5 Max Studio starts at 36GB and goes all the way to 128GB.
Memory bandwidth is the spec that really divides the performance of the chips, because it is how fast the processor can pull data from that memory. The M5 Pro mini moves data at 307 gigabytes per second. The base M5 Max Studio does 460 gigabytes per second, and the upgraded chip with more RAM hits 614 gigabytes per second.
High resolution video timelines care about this, and large local AI models care about it even more. If you want to run a large language model locally on your own hardware, the Studio is the better option, and that 128GB ceiling on the M5 Max is one of the strongest reasons to consider it, because you can load bigger models than anything the M5 Pro can hold. If you are browsing the web, running Photoshop, Safari, and a Zoom call, you are not going to notice any of this. 24GB on the M5 Pro still feels great for that.

Ports and External Displays
The other area where I appreciate the Studio is the ports, and you do pay for that in size. The Studio is not as portable. The M5 Pro mini is still the same 5 inch square that disappears on a desk.
The M5 Pro mini gives you 3 Thunderbolt 5 ports and HDMI on the back, with 2.5 gigabit ethernet standard. On the front you get 2 USB-C ports and a headphone jack. It drives up to 3 external displays.
The M5 Max Studio gives you 4 Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, and 2 USB-A ports on the back, which actually come in handy for audio interfaces or the little dongles for a wireless keyboard and mouse. The front adds 2 USB-C ports and an SD card slot, which is surprisingly handy built in. It drives up to 5 external displays.

Why 10 Gigabit Ethernet Matters Later
The 10 gigabit ethernet on the Studio is a nice touch. It is one of those things you might not need today, but you will appreciate having it later if your workflow grows and you start doing a lot with a NAS. On the M5 Pro mini it is a $100 upgrade, and what bugs me is that you cannot add it later. So if there is any chance you will need it down the road, it is nice to have it already built into the Studio.
Get the M5 Pro Mac Mini If
Get the M5 Pro mini if you want a fast desktop that just disappears. It is the same 5 inch square you can hide behind a monitor, under a desk, or in a cabinet. The 3 Thunderbolt 5 ports handle any external drive you throw at them, and you can always add a docking station if you need more ports later.
This machine handles office work, photo editing, coding, music production, and it edits 4K video easily. It is more computer than most people even need. You can upgrade the internal storage just like on the Studio, so storage is not the reason to move up.
Get the M5 Max Mac Studio If
Move up to the M5 Max Studio if you need to run 4 or 5 external displays, if you want the extra ports, or if you already have a 10 gigabit network at home. The extra RAM in the base model and the room to upgrade all the way to 128GB is another reason to consider it, especially for running large local AI models.
But the single most concrete reason I would point you to the Studio is video editing, and that deserves its own section.

Video Export, the One Measurable Gap
This is the most concrete difference I have ever found between the Pro chips and the Max chips. Every Pro chip from the M1 on has had one video encode engine and one ProRes encode and decode engine. The M5 Max Studio has two video encode engines and two ProRes encode and decode engines. That means the Max chips export video at about double the speed of their Pro counterparts.
I found this to be true on the M4 Pro mini compared to the M4 Max Studio, where the Max export times came in around half. If you are pumping out a lot of exports, or previewing, making changes, and re-rendering the whole video, that is where the M5 Max is worth its weight in gold and the $800 pays for itself fast.
Here is the fair caveat. A lot of people say the Pro chip is just as good at video editing, and for decoding, playback, and scrubbing the timeline, that is true. You will not notice a difference there. It is the actual encoding and exporting where the Max pulls ahead, plus heavy multicam work where the extra memory bandwidth comes into play.
The Price History, and Whether $800 Is Worth It
One honest note on price. The Max Studio started at $2,000 last generation and the Pro mini was about $1,400. Now we are at $1,700 for the M5 Pro and $2,500 for the M5 Max, so the jump is bigger than it used to be.
If time is money for you and you are exporting a lot of video, or you need the extra ports and memory bandwidth, that $800 difference disappears because you make it back in saved time. If none of that describes you, the $800 is just $800.

Don't Overlook the M6 Mac Mini
If you are not convinced you need a Studio and you are leaning toward the M5 Pro, take a quick look at the M6 Mac mini before you spend $1,700. It has 12 CPU cores, 12 GPU cores, and a dual neural engine. It runs up to 32GB of memory and still drives 3 external displays. Apple says it is about 40% faster on CPU than the M4 mini and up to 4 times faster on local AI tasks. The one tradeoff is Thunderbolt 4 instead of Thunderbolt 5.
For a large number of people watching, the M6 mini is honestly the right machine to buy. The biggest drawback is that it starts with 256GB of storage, which is just not enough in 2026 once you factor in iMessage, your apps, and system files. Start at 512GB at a minimum. That is the tier Apple should have shipped by default.
Storage and RAM Upgrade Math
Here is where the M6 mini and the M5 Pro mini actually cross. Move up to the M5 Pro if you want both more storage and more RAM, because once you add both of those upgrades to the M6, you are quickly closing the gap on the M5 Pro anyway. At that point the extra memory bandwidth on the M5 Pro pays for itself in the long run. If you only need one of those upgrades, the M6 is probably still your machine.

The Verdict
Do not be fooled by the core counts. The M5 Pro mini and M5 Max Studio are far apart on GPU cores, memory capacity, and memory bandwidth, and those are the lines that decide this, not the CPU. The Max Studio earns its $800 premium if you are a video editor, if you run large local AI models, if you need 4 or 5 displays, or if you want the extra ports and 10 gigabit ethernet. Hit two or more of those and the Studio is an easy call.
If you do not hit them, the M5 Pro mini is going to feel exactly the same for a lot less money, and it is already more machine than most people need. And if you are still not sure you need the Pro, the M6 mini is the right pick for most people as long as you bump it to at least 512GB of storage.
