M5 MacBook Air vs M5 MacBook Pro: Which One Should You Buy

The M5 MacBook Pro came out last fall, but we finally have the M5 MacBook Air. That means I can put both computers side by side and talk about the real differences, not just the spec sheet. I spent the last month using each one and running a full set of tests, and I want to help you figure out if the base M5 MacBook Pro is worth the extra money over the Air. M5 MacBook Air vs M5 MacBook Pro

For most people the M5 MacBook Air is the better buy. The base M5 MacBook Pro gives you a nicer screen and an extra port, but only marginally more speed.

Intro: Who This Is For

This comparison is for anyone deciding between the two smallest, most affordable Apple laptops with the new M5 chip. If you mostly answer emails, browse the web, and do office work, both of these will feel identical and you do not need to overthink it. The decision gets interesting if you edit photos, cut video, compile code, or render 3D graphics, because that is where the fan and the screen start to matter. I use the Air as my secondary and backup laptop, and I reached for it constantly during testing. Here is everything I found.

The Chip: 8-Core vs 10-Core GPU

Both computers run the M5 chip, but the Pro gets a slightly upgraded version. The MacBook Pro has 10 GPU cores against the 8 GPU cores in the stock M5 MacBook Air. There is a way around that on the Air. If you upgrade the Air to 24 GB of RAM or a larger SSD, Apple gives you the 10-core GPU for free. So the GPU gap is not fixed. It depends on how you spec the Air.

Portability, Weight, and Size

The MacBook Air weighs about 2.7 lb and the MacBook Pro weighs 3.4 lb. That 0.7 lb difference is small on paper, but the Air feels so much lighter and more portable when I carry it around. For that reason alone I usually grab the Air. Size options also differ. The Air comes in a 13-inch or a 15-inch size. If you want the M5 chip in a MacBook Pro, it is only available in the 14-inch size. For day-to-day use you will not notice a big difference between the two. Both are snappy and both handle pretty much anything you throw at them. You only start to feel the Pro’s extra power on longer exports and projects that lean on the chip for a sustained period.

The Display Difference

The display is one of the biggest differences between these two. The MacBook Pro’s screen is a little larger and it is a mini LED panel, while the Air uses a standard LED panel. The Pro also has 120Hz ProMotion, which makes moving the cursor feel smoother and adapts the refresh rate based on what is on screen. Brightness is the other gap. The MacBook Pro hits 1,000 nits for standard content and 1,600 nits for HDR. The MacBook Air tops out at 500 nits. I find 500 nits is fine for most indoor use, but in direct sunlight outdoors it can feel a little low, so I appreciate the extra range on the Pro. If you want, you can spend a little extra on the Pro to add the nano-texture coating, which helps cut reflections.

Webcam, Mic, and Speakers

Both laptops have good webcams, great microphones, and solid speakers, but the Pro is just better across the board. The clearest gain is speaker quality. You notice extra low end because there are six speakers in the Pro against four in the Air. The microphone on the Pro sounds a touch better, but not by much, and the webcams look about the same to me. These are quality-of-life wins for the Pro, not deal breakers for the Air.

Wireless: Where the Air Actually Wins

Here is a spot where the Air beats the Pro. The M5 MacBook Air added the N1 chip, which gives you Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. For whatever reason, the base model M5 MacBook Pro is stuck on Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. You only get the newer Apple wireless chip on the Pro if you step up to the M5 Pro or M5 Max chip. If wireless is a priority, the cheaper Air is technically ahead of the base Pro.

Ports

Both computers use Thunderbolt 4 ports. On the MacBook Air you get two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the left side, MagSafe for charging, and a headphone jack on the right. You can also charge through the Thunderbolt ports if you prefer. The MacBook Pro adds a third Thunderbolt 4 port, an SD card reader, and an HDMI port on the right side, and those extra ports are genuinely nice to have. Thunderbolt 4 is still great. You can run external displays, charge through the ports, and connect plenty of fast external SSDs. If you want Thunderbolt 5, you have to go up to at least the M5 Pro or M5 Max chip, which is a little disappointing. I wish the base M5 MacBook Pro had Thunderbolt 5.

SSD Speed and RAM

On the MacBook Air I was clocking between 5,500 and 6,500 MB/s on read and write. I hit about 6,500 MB/s on my MacBook Pro, but that is the older 512 GB version. Apple recently changed the configurations, and the MacBook Pro now starts at 1 TB from the factory, which is a nice bump. On my 1 TB M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pros I was getting about 11,500 MB/s on read and write. I am not sure the 1 TB base M5 will be that fast, so if you have one, drop a comment and let us know your disk speeds. On RAM, both start at 16 GB and both can go up to 24 or 32 GB. The M5 Pro and Max chips let you push higher. Both machines share the same 153 GB/s of memory bandwidth, which just means the RAM talks to the CPU and GPU very fast.

The Single-Fan Letdown

The biggest design difference comes down to cooling. The MacBook Air is still fanless. No fan means it thermal throttles faster, but it also stays completely silent with zero fan noise. The M5 MacBook Pro has a single fan, and that is a real letdown. The chassis actually has room for a second fan, but you only get the second fan if you buy the M5 Pro or M5 Max chip. So the base M5 MacBook Pro can still run into thermal throttling where the M5 clearly has more to give but cannot shed the heat to use it. You are already paying more money to get a fan, so I think Apple should just put the second fan in the base M5 MacBook Pro.

Benchmarks: Xcode and Blender

Now to the tests. You can see my full chart of every computer I have tested over the last few years at adamtalks.tech/mactests. In the Xcode compile benchmark, the MacBook Pro was slightly faster at 160 seconds against 196 seconds on the Air. Blender is where the fan starts to pay off. On the classroom scene the Air took 51 seconds and the Pro dropped to 29 seconds. On the much heavier barber shop scene the gap grew, coming in at 5 minutes 53 seconds on the Air and 3 minutes 30 seconds on the Pro.

Music Production and Video Editing

For music production I ran Logic Pro. The Pro handled up to 130 MIDI tracks against 120 on the Air, which is not much of a difference. An offline bounce of 64 tracks took 30 seconds on both, so no gap there. Pushing to a 512-track bounce, the Air took 4 minutes 30 seconds and the Pro took 3 minutes 51 seconds. Very marginal gains for the Pro.

On to video. Scrubbing the Final Cut Pro timeline felt about the same on both, and I could move around smoothly. I will say the base M5 chips are slower than the M5 Pro and M5 Max for things like rendering waveforms and reloading thumbnails after you blade a clip. The Final Cut magnetic mask on an 18-second clip took 28 seconds on the Air and 26 seconds on the Pro. A 3-minute 4K export loaded with titles, effects, and audio effects took the same minute and a half on both. I then ran a more intensive 30-minute export, and it took 15 minutes 30 seconds on the Air against 14 minutes 53 seconds on the Pro. The fan sped up the Pro a little, but I think it still hit some thermal throttling, because it was not crazy fast.

Lightroom Classic is where I started to see a major difference. Importing 500 raw photos and fetching the initial previews took about 26 seconds on the Air and 21 seconds on the Pro. Exporting is where the gap opened up. A 500-photo export took 2 minutes 23 seconds on the Pro and jumped all the way to 8 minutes 8 seconds on the Air. A smaller 200-photo export was much closer, at 2 minutes 8 seconds on the Air and 59 seconds on the Pro. So you can get away with the Air as long as you are not firing off huge photo exports back to back. For adjusting exposure, applying effects, and cropping, both felt the same and were more than usable.

Local AI and Benchmarks

I also ran some local AI tests. In DiffusionBee, generating a cat working on a laptop and eating nachos took 16.24 seconds on the Air and 12.36 seconds on the Pro, so a little faster. In LM Studio running Gemma 3 4B, the results were close. Tokens per second and time to first token were usually within a second or half a second of each other, and total tokens per second was basically identical depending on the test. On Geekbench, the single-core scores were close, but the Pro pulled ahead significantly on multi-core and Metal GPU, which fits how the chip responds when it runs hot for a longer period. Geekbench AI scores came out very close between the two.

The Verdict

After a month with both, I found you get only marginally better performance from the base M5 MacBook Pro over the Air. You really need to step up to the M5 Pro or M5 Max chip to notice a huge jump. Buy the base M5 MacBook Pro and you are mostly paying for the extra Thunderbolt port, the better display, slightly faster speeds, and quality-of-life touches like the better speakers.

So is it worth the extra $400 over the Air? The Air is for you if you want the lighter, silent computer that still handles almost any task, knowing it will thermal throttle sooner. If you are not doing heavy video exports, code compiles, or Blender renders all day, the Air is a great deal and the screen is fine. If you will lean on the machine for intensive work all day, consider the Pro, and honestly consider putting the extra $400 toward the M5 Pro chip, because that is where the export and render speeds really open up. For me, the Air wins. The power-to-size ratio is unbeatable, and it stays my go-to.

Bottom Line

The base M5 MacBook Pro is a nicer computer than the Air, but not by enough to justify the price for most people. Unless you are exporting photos or rendering all day, the lighter, silent, cheaper MacBook Air is the smarter buy. If you truly need the power, skip the base Pro and put the money toward the M5 Pro chip.
